To Mr.Tony Lee, Apple Sr. director for worldwide markets or whom it may concern, (Mr. Ey Yeo, Apple Sr. Manager, iPod Product Marketing)

To support Thai language in iPod.

Apple Inc. introduced a portable digital music player, iPod, in 2001, however, Apple Inc. has not included Thai language in iPod ever since. There are petitions asking Apple Inc. to include Thai language in iPod released as follows.

The first petition asking Apple Inc. to include Thai language in the next original firmware from Apple Inc. was released in December 28, 2005.

The second petition was released once again in March 20, 2007. In the mean time, An authorized Apple service provider (Macintosh Center Co.Ltd) came up with its own Thai iPod firmware which works relatively fine. Of course, it charges money for the firmware.

Apple Inc. recently introduced new iPod product line on September 2007, and it seems like there is no Thai language included in an iPod.

Although there were just only roughly a thousand names (more than 1,200 names as of September 10, 2007) signing for petition, but in 2005 there were more than 100,000 iPod users in Thailand * and it was estimated that more than 1,000 iPods are monthly sold in Thailand. The figure is estimated from sales volume from authorized (iStudio) and non-authorized dealers in Thailand.

เรื่อง เรียกร้องให้ iPod สามารถแสดงตัวอักษรภาษาไทย

ตั้งแต่ Apple Inc. เปิดตัวผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องเล่นเพลงดิจิตอลพกพาตระกูล iPod ในปี ค.ศ. 2001 เป็นต้นมา ปัญหาสำคัญของผู้ใช้งานคนไทย คือ การไม่สามารถแสดงผลตัวอักษรภาษาไทยในเครื่องเล่น iPod

เมื่อครั้งวันที่ 28 ธันวาคม 2005 ได้เริ่มเปิดให้ผู้ใช้งาน iPod ที่เป็นคนไทย ได้ลงชื่อในจดหมายเรียกร้องถึง Apple Inc. ให้ติดตั้งตัวอักษรไทยในระบบการแสดงผลของ iPod ที่ออกมาจากโรงงานของ Apple โดยตรง

และในวันที่ 20 มีนาคม 2007 ได้ดำเนินการส่งจดหมายเปิดผนึกถึง Apple Inc. อีกครั้งเรื่องการใช้งานตัวอักษรไทยในเครื่องเล่น iPod และการที่มีผู้ให้บริการบางรายในประเทศไทย ทำการแก้ไขระบบการแสดงผลของ iPod ให้สามารถใช้งานภาษาไทยได้แล้วนำมาคิดเงินเพิ่มจากผู้ใช้งาน

ล่าสุด กันยายน 2007 Apple Inc. ได้ทำการเปิดตัวครอบครัวผลิตภัณฑ์ iPod รุ่นใหม่ และจากการคาดการณ์ว่า ผลิตภัณฑ์ iPod ยังคงไม่สามารถใช้งานภาษาไทยได้เช่นเดิม

แม้ว่าจำนวนรายชื่อในจดหมายถึง Apple Inc. ในครั้งแรก จะมีเพียงหลักพัน (มากกว่า 1,200 รายชื่อ ณ วันที่ 10 กันยายน 2007) ซึ่งอาจไม่สะท้อนปริมาณการใช้งานจริง

ในปี 2005 มีการคาดการณ์จำนวนผู้ใช้งาน iPod ที่เป็นคนไทย มีมากกว่า 100,000 เครื่องในประเทศไทย * และปัจจุบันประมาณการผ่านร้านค้า ทั้งที่เป็นทางการและไม่เป็นทางการ (ทั้งในร้าน iStudio และร้านขายเครื่องเล่นเพลงดิจิตอลอื่นๆ) มียอดขายมากกว่า 1,000 เครื่องต่อเดือน

จึงแจ้งให้ทราบอีกครั้ง และพิจารณาเพื่อแก้ปัญหาดังกล่าว

To whom it may concern,
To support Thai language in iPod.

After we have done the petition asking Apple Inc. to include Thai language in the next iPod firmware update in December 27, 2005, we, thus far, have not seen anything done lately on the recent iPod firmware update.

An authorized Apple service provider (Macintosh Center Co.Ltd) comes up with its own Thai iPod firmware which works relatively fine. Of course, it charges money for the firmware. Moreover, once having this firmware installed, those iPods are not recommended to have original iPod firmware installed again because Thai language will be gone. Having said that, Apple, Inc. always recommends iPod users to have latest iPod firmware installed. We recognized that, but we couldn’t do anything but wait for MacCenter Co.Ltd to release their own new Thai iPod firmware which usually takes a long time (It has sometimes come out just a month before the new original iPod firmware came out). That has been irritating Thai iPod users for more than 5 years since Apple first released 1st generation iPod.

Since iPhone is going to be available in Asia in 2008 or earlier, and we are eagerly waiting for its coming. it would be nice to see Thai language included in iPhone. In the mean time, it would also make Thai users happy if we see Thai language in iPod for the next firmware update. Is it the time for Apple Inc. to take this matter seriously as iPod has become much more popular nowadays in Thailand compared to 5 years ago? We, once again, are asking Apple Inc. to include Thai language in your next iPod firmware update as you did it very well in OS X a long time ago and we are very pleased with that.

เรื่อง ขอให้พิจารณาเพิ่มการแสดงผลภาษาไทยใน iPod

หลังจากที่ทางเราได้่ร่วมลงชื่อเรียกร้องให้ Apple Inc. ทำการอัพเดทระบบการแสดงผลที่รองรับการใช้งานภาษาไทยด้วย ไปเมื่อวันที่ 27 ธันวาคม 2548 ที่ผ่านมา (To support Thai language in iPod.) ทางเราได้สังเกตุว่าทาง Apple Inc. ยังนิ่งเฉยไม่มีปฏิกิริยาใดๆ

ขณะนี้มีผู้ให้บริการบางราย (Macintosh Center Co.Ltd) ได้ทำ Thai iPod firmware update ขึ้นมาซี่งใช้งานได้ดีพอสมควร เพื่อจำหน่ายให้กับผู้ที่ต้องการอัพเดทภาษาไทย แต่ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้นผู้จัดจำหน่ายได้คิดค่าติดตั้ง Thai iPod firmware ด้วย โดยหลังจากอัพเดทแล้วจะไม่สามารถอัพเดท original iPod firmware ของทาง Apple ได้ ซึ่งทำให้ไม่สะดวกในการอัพเดทเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาต่างๆ ที่ Apple recommend (กล่าวคือ ถ้าอัพเดท ipod firmware original version แล้วภาษาไทยก็ไม่สามารถแสดงผลได้อีก) ทางผู้ใช้ iPod ในประเทศไทยตระหนักดีถึงปัญหาการแสดงผลภาษาไทย แต่เราก็ทำอะไรไม่ได้นอกจากจะรอ Thai iPod firmware update ตัวใหม่ ซี่งบางทีก็ต้องรอเป็นเวลานาน บางครั้งกว่า Thai iPod firmware update จะออกมา firmware ตัวใหม่ของ original iPod ก็ออกตามมาหลังนั้นไม่นาน

และจากที่ทาง Apple Inc. จะออกโทรศัพท์มือถือ iPhone ในทวีปเอเชียในปี 2551 หรือก่อนหน้านั้น ทางผู้ใช้ในไทยก็ได้ติดตามข่าวและรู้สึกตื่นเต้นกับ iPhone ด้วย มันจะดีมากถ้าผู้ใช้ในประเทศไทยได้เห็นภาษาไทยใน iPhone และมันจะดียิ่งขึ้นไปอีกถ้าทาง Apple Inc. ได้เพิ่มภาษาไทยเข้าไปใน iPod firmware ตัวใหม่ที่กำลังจะออก ทางเราเห็นว่าถึงเวลาแล้วที่ทาง Apple Inc. ควรจะใส่ใจกับสิ่งที่เราได้เรียกร้องมาตลอดสองปีที่ผ่านมา ผนวกกับการที่ iPod เป็นที่นิยมสำหรับคนไทยในปัจจุบันเปรียบเทียบกับห้าปีที่ผ่านมา ทางเราจึงต้องการเรียกร้องให้ทำการเพิ่มความสามารถในการแสดงผลภาษาไทย (เหมือนที่เคยทำไน Mac OS X ได้อย่างดี) อีกครั้งหนึ่ง

จึงแจ้งมาอีกครั้ง เพื่อให้รับทราบปัญหาของผู้ใช้ที่เป็นคนไทย

December 27, 2005 To whom it may concern, To support Thai language in iPod. iPod is recently not only a portable digital music player, but it also provides extra functionalities such as using it as a external hard-drive and personal organizer, making it far superior than rivals in the market. iPod has been a popular digital music player in Thailand during these recent years as well. However, iPod has never supported Thai language since the beginning (from 1G to 5G), meaning that I can not read or put any digital contents with Thai language in it.

I have encountered some difficulties as mentioned earlier. I would like to request Apple Computer to consider my requests as following.

1. Adding Thai language in the setting menu in iPod.
2. Supporting Thai language for all digital file name.
3. Supporting Thai language in Contact, Calendar, Note.

According to the request mentioned above, iPod will be more useful and enjoyable for Thai.

Please take my requests into your consideration.

PS. I have also gathered a list of those who think iPod should support Thai language below.

จากที่ผลิตภัณฑ์ iPod ได้รับความนิยมเป็นที่แพร่หลายทั่วโลก ด้วยความสามารถที่เกินกว่าเครื่องเล่นเพลงดิจิตอลทั่วไป สามารถเล่นไฟล์ดิจิตอลได้หลากหลาย รวมทั้งสามารถนำไปใช้เก็บบันทึกข้อมูลได้อีกด้วย

แต่จากที่ผ่านมา ตั้งแต่ iPod 1st generation จนถึงปัจจุบัน iPod with video (5G) แต่ในทุกรุ่นที่มีหน้าจอแสดงผล นั้นไม่สามารถแสดงผลตัวอักษรภาษาไทยได้ ทำให้ผู้ใช้งานที่เป็นคนไทย ไม่สามารถพิมพ์หรือบันทึกข้อมูลเป็นภาษาไทย

ข้าพเจ้าตามที่ปรากฎรายชื่อข้างท้ายนี้ ได้พบกับปัญหาและอุปสรรคตามที่กล่าวมา จึงอยากเรียกร้องให้ทาง Apple Computer ได้พิจารณาข้อเรียกร้องดังต่อไปนี้

1. เพิ่มตัวเลือกภาษาไทยเข้าไปในหัวข้อ Language ภายในเมนู Setting เพื่อเปลี่ยนให้เมนูเป็นภาษาไทยได้
2. แสดงภาษาไทยสำหรับชื่อไฟล์ดิจิตอลต่างๆ ที่สามารถนำไปใช้ใน iPod ได้
3. แสดงผลภาษาไทยในส่วนของ Contact, Calendar, Note และส่วนอื่นๆ ภายในไฟล์ดิจิตอลที่สามารถนำไปใช้ใน iPod ได้

จากข้อเรียกร้องข้างต้น หากได้รับการแก้ไข จะทำให้ผู้ใช้งานที่เป็นคนไทย สามารถใช้งาน iPod ได้เต็มความสามารถยิ่งขึ้น

จึงเรียนมาเพื่อทราบ และโปรดพิจารณา
